Scoliosis: What to Look for and Treatment Options

October 28, 2021

Scoliosis is a sideways curve of the spine, often visible from the back as a loss of symmetry.

Arthur Butensky, MD, a pediatrician with Atlantic Medical Group, joined New Jersey Family in a video to share tips with parents about identifying scoliosis and guidance on what to do if your child is diagnosed.

He said the pre-teen and teen years are the most important to watch for scoliosis in your child, but don't panic if you notice asymmetry in your  child's spine. A little bit of asymmetry is normal and can be evaluated by your child's pediatrician.

Watch the video to learn more about:

  • Types of scoliosis
  • Whether scoliosis can be common within a family
  • How much asymmetry is ok
  • Scoliosis screenings in school
  • Tools your pediatrician may use to identify scoliosis
  • How growth plays into treatment
