US News & World Report Cites Morristown Medical Center for Excellence in 'Common Care'

May 20, 2015

May 2015, Morristown, NJ –Morristown Medical Center, part of Atlantic Health System, one of the largest non-profit health care systems in New Jersey, was named among an elite group of hospitals throughout the nation for excellence in U.S. News & World Report’s new “Best Hospitals for Common Care" list.

Morristown Medical Center was one of 34 hospitals nationwide, and one of only two in New Jersey, that were recognized as “High Performing” in all five common surgical procedures and chronic conditions. These five areas include three common operations – heart bypass, hip replacement and knee replacement – and two widespread chronic conditions – congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.

"The new ranking by US News & World Report further demonstrates how the patient care we provide has elevated Morristown Medical Center to be recognized as one of the best in the nation,” said David Shulkin, MD, president of Morristown Medical Center, and vice president of Atlantic Health System. “Year after year, we have made investments in our programs, facilities and technology, recruited the best and brightest physicians, nurses and staff, and focused on quality and outcomes. Through all of this and more, people around the country are beginning to take notice of Morristown Medical Center."

U.S. News developed the new ratings to help patients easily identify hospitals in their communities that excel in treating common conditions. Hospitals were not rated in a procedure or condition if they treated too few patients of that type for U.S. News to conduct a rigorous statistical analysis.

“It’s important for patients, in consultation with their doctors, to be able to research a hospital and know the hospital has treated a sufficient number of patients like them,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis for U.S. News. “Our Best Hospitals for Common Care ratings give patients access to more information and help them make more-informed choices among the hospitals in their communities.”

Last July, Morristown Medical Center was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top five New York metro area hospitals and one of the best hospitals in the nation for 2014-15 in Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Geriatrics, Gynecology, Orthopedics and Pulmonology, as reported today in the publication’s annual Best Hospitals list for 2014-15. Morristown Medical Center also ranked high-performing regionally in Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & GI surgery, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery and Urology. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. The next Best Hospitals list will be available this July.

This new accolade is the latest in a series of commendations for Morristown Medical Center’s dedication to quality care for patients and families. Earlier this year, the hospital was ranked by physicians as the top hospital in New Jersey for the fifth consecutive year by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., one of the nation’s most respected health care research and information companies.  Among hospitals with more than 350 beds, Morristown Medical Center was also top hospital for the treatment of breast, prostate and pediatric cancers, bypass surgery, hip and knee replacement, and the treatment of congestive heart failure, high-risk pregnancies, strokes and neurological disorders.

Also this year, Morristown Medical Center was designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence™ (DICOE) by the American College of Radiology (ACR), and also recently earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Wound Care Certification.
