Atlantic Health System’s Flagship Only Hospital in State
February 25, 2016, Morristown, NJ – Morristown Medical Center today announced it is the only hospital in New Jersey to be recognized in 2016 as one of ‘America’s 50 Best Hospitals’ by consumer healthcare ratings group, Healthgrades®. The hospital had previously been named to the ‘America’s 100 Best Hospitals’ list in 2014 and 2015.
This recognition — the highest achievement a hospital can receive from Healthgrades — signifies it is in the top one percent of hospitals in the nation for providing overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures for at least six consecutive years. Simply put, patients are more likely to have a successful treatment without major complications at America’s Best Hospitals.
“As part of Atlantic Health System’s growing Trusted Network of Caring, we are proud to be recognized on the ‘America’s 50 Best Hospitals’ list — a strong example of our consistent dedication to quality and safety by partnering with our medical staff to ensure delivery of excellent clinical care,” said Trish O’Keefe, RN, Ph.D., interim president of Morristown Medical Center. “For people who need our services, this means they can be confident in our commitment to an excellent patient experience, positive quality outcomes, and long-standing track record for safety.”
Morristown Medical Center was also the only hospital in the state to receive the 2016 Distinguished Hospital Award — Clinical Excellence™. Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence are hospitals recognized in the top 5 percent in the nation with the lowest risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates across at least 21 of 32 common conditions and procedures.
Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center is the only hospital in New Jersey recognized as one of ‘America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care’™ and Critical Care™ for 2016. In addition, Healthgrades recognized Newton Medical Center for cardiac, critical care and pulmonary services in 2016.

About Healthgrades ‘Best Hospitals’ Methodology
Every year, Healthgrades analyzes the most current three years of Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data to produce a detailed report on risk-adjusted mortality and complication outcomes in America’s hospitals. Healthgrades findings empower consumers to evaluate and compare hospital performance. Healthgrades analyzed approximately 45 million Medicare patient records for nearly 4,500 short-term, acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to in-hospital common conditions and procedures for the Medicare population from 2012 through 2014 and one condition based on All-payer state data from 2011 through 2013.
The Healthgrades methodology uses multivariate logistic regression to adjust for patient demographic and clinical risk factors that influence patient outcomes in significant and systematic ways. Risk factors may include age, gender, specific procedure performed, and co-morbid conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Individual risk models are constructed and tailored for each of the 33 conditions or procedures relative to each specific outcome.
