The Skin Surveillance Program Now Available at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center at Morristown Medical Center

April 17, 2017

April 17, 2017, Morristown, NJ – Morristown Medical Center and MoleSafe USA are pleased to announce the opening of the Skin Surveillance Program (SSP) at the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center.  The opening of MoleSafe’s newest location provides the community with access to diagnostic screening for the early detection of skin cancers, including melanoma.

“We recognize the critical importance that preventive care and early detection programs play in the health and wellbeing of our community,” says Eric Whitman, MD, medical director, Atlantic Health System Cancer Care. “The opening of MoleSafe’s newest location provides the residents of Morristown and surrounding communities access to this novel, high technology skin diagnostic screening for the early detection of skin cancers - primarily melanoma,” adds Dr. Whitman, who is also director of the Atlantic Melanoma Center at Morristown Medical Center.

As a company dedicated to delivering advanced, lifesaving skin screenings, MoleSafe has expanded its availability in an effort to combat melanoma through its SSP. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, accounting for the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. *

“We’re excited to make our services more readily accessible to the people of New Jersey,” states Kevin Sheridan, CEO, MoleSafe. “The technology we utilize in our program is crucial to early detection of melanoma, as well as other types of skin cancer. We are happy to be opening our newest SSP Center just as more people are planning to enjoy the time outdoors in the sun.  We will work with the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center and Atlantic Health System to build awareness for this terrible disease.”

Melanoma is cancer that grows in the cells of the skin that produce melanin — the pigment that gives skin its color. Though there is no definitive cause, overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or tanning beds drastically increases the risk.

Over the past three decades, more people have had skin cancer than all other cancers combined. In fact, it is estimated that 87,110 new cases of invasive melanoma will be diagnosed in the U.S. and 9,730 people will die of melanoma in 2017.

“No matter what time of year it is, skin is constantly exposed to potentially harmful amounts of UV rays from the sun,” says Sheridan. “We strongly encourage people to keep an eye on any changes happening on the skin’s surface. But, for true peace of mind, we recommend a screening by a professional.”
