Morristown, N.J., October 6, 2022 – Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center is the first hospital in New Jersey to treat a patient using Camzyos™ (mavacamten), the first and only U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved cardiac myosin inhibitor that targets the underlying pathophysiology of obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (oHCM) to improve functional capacity and symptoms.
Dr. Matthew Martinez, Director of the Atlantic Health System Chanin T. Mast Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Sports Cardiology program, was the first to administer the drug in New Jersey, offering patients a non-invasive option to surgery.
“As a site with a team that is able to administer this novel drug underscores our commitment to offering patients access to the latest, safest and most effective HCM care,” said Dr. Martinez. “In addition to positive patient outcomes, we keep patient experience at the heart of our decisions, which is why Atlantic Health System designed a program to allow patients to easily navigate exploring this as one option for care.”
Morristown Medical Center, located in Morristown New Jersey, is committed to designing and delivering high quality, innovative and personalized health care, to build healthier communities and improve lives for patients. The Bristol Myers Squibb drug mavacamten is used to treat adults with symptomatic New York Heart Association (NYHA) class II-III oHCM, a rare disease that occurs when heart muscles thicken and obstruct blood flow to the rest of the body.
Doctors can discuss whether mavacamten is right for you and any potential side effects associated with its use. If you are interested in learning more about cardiovascular care at Atlantic Health System, visit www.atlantichealth.org/conditions-treatments/heart-care.html.
