The best way to treat allergies is to avoid the substances that are causing them altogether. What’s more, some children may even outgrow their allergies with time and those with only mild cases of an immune system disorder may need no treatment at all.

For those kids that need more assistance managing their symptoms, Goryeb Children's Hospital's Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology provides a variety of treatments, including medications, nasal drainage procedures and immunotherapy. Patients with more serious immune system disorders may require monthly infusions of blood products or bone marrow transplants.

Allergy Medications

Allergy medications come in all forms – pills, eye drops, injections, nasal sprays and inhalers. Which type is right for the child will largely depend on his or her age and severity of symptoms. Some of the medications our medical team prescribes include:

  • Antihistamines
  • Corticosteroids
  • Decongestants
  • Epinephrine

Immunotherapy

Also called allergy shots, immunotherapy may be recommended for children whose allergies are difficult to control. During treatment, the patient receives progressively stronger injections over the course of several doctor visits to suppress an allergic reaction. In some cases, medicine may be placed under the tongue in place of an injection.

As part of Atlantic Health System Children’s Health, physician services are provided through Atlantic Medical Group and are on staff at Goryeb Children’s Hospital.
