Atlantic Health System Heart Care's vascular laboratories diagnose most cerebrovascular problems. Though the brain is only about two percent of total body weight, it receives about 20 percent of the blood that flows through the entire body.
We offer the following cerebrovascular studies:
- Carotid duplex study – produces imaging and Doppler ultrasound measurements by placing an ultrasound probe on the side of the neck near the carotid arteries to check for any abnormalities
- Vertebrobasilar flow – measures the blood flow in the arteries at the base of the brain (back of the neck) using Doppler technology Transcranial Doppler (TCD) – uses a small Doppler ultrasound probe to assess blood flow through the cerebral vessels, much like a stethoscope allows a physician to listen to circulation in the chest
- Vascular and neurovascular MRI – produces clear pictures of blood vessels in the head, aorta, and legs using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)
