Epilepsy is the most prevalent neurological condition in the United States, affecting two to three percent of the population at some point during their lives. There are different types of epilepsy, different causes of epilepsy and different types of seizures. Medications are effective in controlling most seizures, but surgery and specialized diets also have benefits.

Social work services are also available through the epilepsy clinic to provide patients and their families with resources and individualized support that offer compassion and comfort. It is common for many patients to experience anxiety, depression or mood disorders. In these cases, medications that have an adverse effect on behavior may not be prescribed and a referral to a behavioral medicine specialist may be provided. Our social worker can help bridge the gap between any support services that our patients may need, including cognitive behavioral therapy.
