Have you struggled with obstructive sleep apnea and tried CPAP machines with no relief? There’s a new FDA-approved treatment available with no mask or hose involved.
An alternative treatment, called hypoglossal nerve stimulation (Inspire), works inside the body to restore muscle tone and open the upper airway while you sleep. Once implanted, the Inspire device is activated by the click of a remote at bedtime.
The Atlantic Health Sleep Wellness Program is one of the few in New Jersey offering this innovative procedure.
How the Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation (Inspire) Device Works
The device sends a gentle pulse to key airway muscles while you sleep, causing the tongue to move forward. This keeps airways open and allows you to breathe normally and sleep peacefully.
Benefits to Using Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation (Inspire)
Alternative to CPAP
The device treats the root cause of sleep apnea by applying gentle stimulation to key airway muscles during sleep, allowing you to breathe normally, and more importantly, sleep without a mask, hose, or machine.
Proven Procedure
The device is placed under the skin of the neck and chest during a short, outpatient procedure. After healing, the device is turned on and you’ll be ready to get the sleep you’ve been dreaming of.
Eligibility
Our doctors will work with you to determine eligibility, but you might be a candidate if you:
- have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea
- are 18 years old and over
- are not significantly obese
- have been unable to use or get consistent benefits from CPAP machines
The Process
After meeting with our doctors to determine your eligibility, our ear, nose and throat specialist will complete a thorough assessment of your airways. If you’re a good candidate, a short surgical procedure is scheduled to place Inspire under the skin of the neck and chest. Soon after the procedure, you’ll return to have the device turned on and fine-tuned to your body.
