Our physical therapists, athletic trainers, medical specialists and exercise physiologists conduct various tests to establish a baseline and determine the proper course for achieving any athletic goal.

VO2 Max Test

VO2 max is the maximum amount of oxygen your cardiopulmonary system can transport to working muscles during intense exercise. The test takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes, during which you’ll wear a specialized mask that measures your oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange while exercising on a treadmill. At its completion, you’ll know your aerobic capacity and anaerobic threshold, as well as how efficiently your body uses oxygen as fuel during physical activity. The VO2 max test also determines your individual heart rate zones, which can help optimize your training.

Resting Metabolic Rate

The resting metabolic rate test determines the amount of energy your body burns when it’s at complete rest and whether it uses fats or carbohydrates as its primary fuel source. This information can help you calculate the number of calories needed each day to maintain or lose weight. During the test, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes, you’ll relax in a chair and wear a specialized mask while our sports performance team measures your oxygen and carbon dioxide intake and outtake.

Balance Training and Proprioception Improvement

Using the Biodex BioSway™, our sports performance specialists can assess three of your body’s sensory systems, including:

  • Somatosensory – ability to determine touch, temperature and your body’s position in space
  • Vestibular – ability to maintain balance and equilibrium
  • Visual – ability to see movement

Body Composition Analysis

Atlantic Sports Health measures body composition using X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), which accounts for bone mineral content and is considered the gold standard in body-fat analysis. The test emits less radiation than a standard cross-country flight and can determine lean muscle and fat tissue mass for both the total body and 14 regional areas, including arms, legs and trunk. Your body composition is automatically tracked within our system, which allows us to easily monitor your progress over time.

Sports Nutrition

Our sports nutritionists have advanced credentials and experience designing diets that enhance athletic performance. Areas of specialization include pre- and post-competition eating and meal planning, nutrition with dietary restrictions, fluid replacement, and safe and effective ways to lose or gain weight.
