Atlantic Health System
Consumers nationwide are increasingly concerned with preserving our natural resources and so is Atlantic Health System. As a registered member of the New Jersey Sustainable Business Registry, we strive to pursue recycling and energy saving policies to the fullest extent whenever possible and treat our environment with respect. Employees on our Green Team initiate and report on the eco-friendly projects happening throughout the organization to help us reach these goals.
Multi-Stream Recycling and Waste Reduction
Atlantic Health System participates in multi-stream recycling – a collection method in which waste recyclables are sourced into separate bins. Paper fibers are placed in one container and plastics, glass and aluminums are placed in another. In addition, beverages sold in our cafeterias come with paper straws, helping save nearly 300,000 plastic straws annually.
Energy and Water Conservation
Our Engineering and Facility Services work continuously to improve our energy efficiency by using LED lights and occupancy sensors and upgrading equipment. Each of our hospitals also has a comprehensive water management plan and low flow fixtures to reduce consumption.
Safer Chemicals
Atlantic Health System has implemented practices to ensure that we meet environmental compliance regulations for chemicals. Whenever possible, we substitute certain high-risk materials with safer alternatives and use Green Seal-certified cleaning products.
Green Designs and Construction
New constructions on our campuses are designed to meet the standards of the Green Guide for Healthcare. This includes Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute and Morristown Medical Center’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building by the US Green Building Council for using materials and finishes with more natural or recycled fibers and more energy-efficient ventilation systems.
Transportation
Atlantic Health System encourages employees to participate in carpool programs and has installed charging stations for electric vehicles at Chilton, Morristown and Overlook medical centers. We have also upgraded much of our shuttle fleet to more modern, fuel-efficient models.
