Cardiac Rhythm Management

Atlantic Health System Heart Care's cardiac rhythm management team uses innovative technology to diagnose and treat heart rhythm problems such as:

• Palpitations
• Atrial fibrillation
• Tachycardia (ventricular and supraventricular)
• Rhythm abnormalities that can cause fainting spells
• Long QT and Brugada syndromes, as well as other inherited cardiac rhythm abnormalities

We evaluate and treat abnormal heart rhythms using these techniques:

• Electrophysiology (EP) studies – procedure to diagnose uncomfortable and potentially dangerous rapid or slow heartbeats. Electrode catheters are inserted through veins and arteries, typically from the groin, into the heart chambers to determine the origins and mechanisms of the abnormal heart rhythm.
• Arrhythmia mapping – creates a 3-D electrical map of the cause and origin of abnormal heart rhythms using electrode catheters with GPS technology.
• Tilt table testing – helps determine whether fainting may be caused by low blood pressure associated with or independent from slow heartbeats, often due to a miscommunication among the brain, heart and blood vessels.
• Electrode catheter ablation - procedure that can cure various forms of rapid heartbeats via the application of radiofrequency (heat) or cryo (freezing) energy from catheters inserted into the heart.
• Cardiac resynchronization therapy –  a half-dollar-sized pacemaker is implanted, usually just below the collarbone, to detect heart rate irregularities and emit tiny pulses of electricity to correct them.
• Pacemaker and defibrillator implantation and follow-up

Our doctors, nurses and dedicated research team have participated in many clinical trials that have helped expand treatment options for patients with heart rhythm disturbances. These trials include studies initiated by the National Institutes of Health and industry-sponsored clinical trials involving pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, catheter electrode systems, ablation techniques and antiarrhythmic medications.
