Each patient in the ICU is under the care of a team of doctors. The intensive care teams are based on the nature of the illness or injury.
Trauma and Acute Care
Morristown Medical Center’s Trauma Center is verified as a Level I Regional Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons and designated a Level II by the state of New Jersey.
Morristown Medical’s Surgical Critical Care and Trauma Services have one goal: to return the patient to the highest level of functioning. We have been providing excellent patient outcomes for more than 10 years, offering the highest level of care and injury prevention efforts. We also provide rehabilitation evaluation and services.
The most severely injured patients are brought to us by ambulance or helicopter. They are welcomed by our Luciano Family Trauma and Acute Care Center trauma team, which can quickly diagnose and treat life-threatening injuries.
In addition, there is an on-call roster of board-certified subspecialists immediately available when activated by the primary trauma team, in fields such as spine surgery, urology, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, hand surgery, interventional radiology and cardiology. Our trauma surgeon-critical care doctors manage patient care in the ICU.
Neuro Trauma
More than one million people each year sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), a sudden physical blow to the head that may cause a contusion (bruising of the brain), a hematoma (bleeding around the brain) or both, and can damage the brain, leading to coma and even death.
Morristown Medical Center's Trauma Center, treats neuro trauma patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Luciano Family Trauma and Acute Care Center partners with local communities’ emergency services to ensure that acutely injured patients arrive at Morristown Medical in a timely manner and are treated as quickly as possible. In addition, our health care team conducts trauma research and offers community education and injury prevention programs.
Surgical Trauma
If you are in the ICU after a non trauma related surgery, your surgeon will continue to care for you as your attending physician. The critical care trauma team will also work along with your surgeon to provide management of your needs. Surgical residents will also be part of your physician team.
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine
If you are in the ICU for medical condition you will be cared for by our pulmonary critical care medicine intensivists. They are the “captain of the ship” overseeing day-to-day care as well as communicating with and consulting other specialists. The intensivists in the ICU at Morristown Medical Center are board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care medicine.
If you are critically ill with a medical neurological condition, such as a stroke, a hospitalist will serve as your attending physician. A hospitalist is a physician, board-certified in internal medicine with expertise in the care of patients in the hospital. The hospitalists' job is to help you return home as healthy and as quickly as possible. The hospitalist will coordinate your care if you are being cared for in the ICU, and will consult a critical care physician (or intensivist) from our pulmonary critical care physician group. If necessary, the hospitalist may also consult specialists, such as neurologists and neurosurgeons. These specialists can answer your questions about their area of practice.
