Maternal-fetal medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and on-going care of women who have a high risk of problems during pregnancy. This includes patients with a history of previous complicated pregnancies, chronic health conditions or medical issues that arise unexpectedly.

At Atlantic Maternal-Fetal Medicine, we offer a variety of services to both women with normal pregnancies and those who are at high risk:

  • Maternal fetal medicine consultations
  • Pre-conceptual consultations
  • Genetic counseling
  • Amniocentesis
  • Chorionic villus sampling
  • Routine ultrasounds
  • Fetal surveillance
  • Fetal echocardiograms
  • Sonohysterography
  • Gestational diabetes education and management

What to Expect

A maternal fetal medicine specialist, also called a perinatologist, works with a patient’s regular obstetrician to develop a care plan. Though a patient may have several appointments with the maternal fetal medicine specialist, the obstetrician will continue to manage the pregnancy and deliver the baby. Perinatologists are usually not present at delivery, but are available for consultation as needed.

Our maternal fetal medicine physician services are provided in collaboration with a specialized Atlantic Medical Group practice.

Gestational Diabetes 101

A woman’s pregnancy journey is filled with countless unexpected surprises. Unfortunately, not all of them are welcome. Learning you have gestational diabetes—a rise in blood sugar levels that occurs only during pregnancy—is one surprise that fills many moms with concerns for their own health and the health of their baby.
