Atlantic Health System’s prenatal classes can help keep you healthy throughout your pregnancy and prepare you for the arrival of your newborn. Unless otherwise noted, fees are charged per couple.

Prenatal Programs at Chilton Medical Center

Baby Basics

Babies don’t come with instructions. Get ahead of the game by learning how to care for your newborn before he or she is born. Topics include newborn characteristics and daily care; concerns about safety and illness; when to call the pediatrician; how to bathe, diaper and burp a baby; and how to care for the cord. Tips from the “Happiest Baby on the Block” on soothing fussy infants and helping them sleep longer are also included.  
* Grandparents may attend for an additional cost.

Breastfeeding

Boost your confidence and get off to a good start nourishing your newborn by learning basic breastfeeding techniques from our lactation nurse educators. Topics include proper positioning for mother and baby, achieving a correct latch, common concerns about nutrition, the partner’s role, pumping and storage of breast milk, and returning to work.

Breastfeeding Support Group

Join other moms in an informal and welcoming group that supports breastfeeding mothers and their children. Lactation consultations will also be on hand to answer questions. There is no charge to attend this program.

Calling All Grandparents!

Grandparents can learn about their role in the birth of a baby and new trends in child care. Topics include bathing and cord care, breastfeeding, introducing solid foods, car seat safety and safety in the home.

Prepared Childbirth

Expectant mothers and their partners will learn about the stages of childbirth, the role of the partner, coping and breathing techniques, and the postpartum period. A tour of the Chilton Medical Center Maternity Center is included. This class should be completed approximately four weeks before the baby’s due date.

Perinatal Bereavement Ceremony

A Ceremony of Remembrance to remember all of the precious babies who left us too soon. The ceremony will include art therapy, light refreshments and a walk to the remembrance garden for a butterfly release. Family members welcome.

Prenatal Yoga

Learn the benefits of a mindfulness practice during & after pregnancy.  Explore yoga, meditation and breathing exercises that all support creating a mindful space to help you relax and connect wit your baby. This class is for expectant moms only. 

This virtual class is held the 4th Thursday of the month at 7:30pm.

Sibling Preparation

Big brothers and big sisters play a very important role in welcoming a new member into the family. This class helps to ease children ages 3 through 10 into this new phase of their lives. Activities include a short video, a holding and diapering practice, and a tour of our maternity center.

ABCs of Going Home With Your Baby

Topics include basic infant care, diapering, dressing, bathing, swaddling, holding, soothing, bottle feeding, when to call the baby’s doctor and how to manage with pets at home. Safety issues will also be addressed, including sleeping, cribs, car seats, baby products and baby-proofing your home.

This class is for parents who have completed our “Breastfeeding Your Baby Part I” class or who are interested in learning how to pump their own breast milk. Topics include pumping and storing breast milk, maintaining milk supply and returning to work while continuing to breastfeed. Partners are welcome.

Great Expectations: Prepared Childbirth and Infant Care for Parents Expecting Twins, Triplets or More

Topics include how to care for more than one baby at a time, the last few days of pregnancy, signs and symptoms of pre-term labor, and vaginal and cesarean deliveries.

Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal massages are used to alleviate many of the common physical and emotional discomforts of pregnancy, including back pain, leg cramps, fatigue, muscle tension and anxiety. A signed prescription from your doctor is necessary. For more information and to register, please call 973-971-6301.

Prepared Childbirth: Instruction for Labor and Birth

Topics include the birth process, such as signs and symptoms of labor, stages of labor, when to go to the hospital and what to bring with you; pain management strategies, such as breathing and relaxation techniques, comfort measures, massage, positioning, hydrotherapy, medication options and epidural anesthesia; hospital procedures; cesarean section; and physical and emotional recovery after birth.

Join us for this informative online baby care class presented by Newton Medical Center.  Deadline for registration is three business days before the class.

Expectant mothers and their support person will learn the
tools to care for their newborn. Topics will include basic infant care,

Prepared Childbirth

Join us for this in person class for expectant mom and their
support person, both should be enrolled prior to class date.  Deadline for registration is three business days before the class.

Presented by Newton Medical Center, this class will cover
the stages of labor, comfort measures, hospital routines, cesarean birth, labor variations, relaxation and breathing techniques, role of the coach, when to call the practitioner, pain management, and the immediate post-partum period.

Please be prepared with 2 pillows and a blanket or yoga mat. An information packet and the “Bridge to Parenthood” booklet will be mailed to you. 

Childbirth classes are held in-person every second Saturday of the month.
