Allergies are the result of an over-sensitive immune system and may be a major trigger of respiratory illness. Symptoms include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, wheezing, cough and difficulty breathing.
Patients who suspect their respiratory distress is the result of an allergen can turn to the Respiratory Therapy Department for expert diagnosis and treatment. Our pulmonary specialists may perform blood tests and pulmonary function tests, or spirometry, to determine which specific allergen is causing the symptoms. Depending on results, they may prescribe medications, such as antihistamines or nasal steroids, as well as lifestyle changes to prevent flare ups and improve quality of life.
