Testing Before Bariatric Surgery

Every weight loss surgery candidate is different, so be prepared to take several tests before you have the procedure. These tests are important to check your physical and psychological health and to provide a clear picture of your surgical risk.

The first step is a complete medical examination, which includes past and current medical history. Your surgeon will pay close attention to your struggles with your weight and your attempts to lose weight. What did you try in the past? What worked and what did not? The doctors will test you for type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and heart disease – all of which can have an impact on the surgery and your recovery after bariatric surgery. Blood tests, BMI calculations and X-rays are all part of routine pre-surgery testing.

Your heart is important to surgery, too. Since any surgical procedure and recovery puts some stress on your heart, your surgeon will most likely give you an EKG to test that it is strong enough to handle surgery. They will also test your liver, kidney and pulmonary functions.

There is no doubt that your psychological well-being is just as important as physical health. As a result, the mental health examination is part of the process. Because weight loss surgery has a huge impact on your lifestyle, your doctors want to make sure you are ready for it. It will ensure you are able to realize your goals.

Remember, these examinations and tests are extremely important to your health during surgery and for recovery. You must be completely honest and provide as much information as possible to ensure the best possible results.
