About our Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Fellowship

The Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, located on the campus of Morristown Medical Center is a small, focused fellowship - aimed at developing outstanding medical professionals who maintain the highest standards in physiology, pathophysiology and evidence-based practices in neonatology.

Below are a few ways our program differentiates itself.

High NICU census

Atlantic Health System has a busy delivery service. Morristown Medical Center, alone, performs nearly 5,000 deliveries per year. Of these, there are around 580 NICU admissions annually, of which approximately 100 are infants born < 1500 grams. Our average daily census in the NICU is 33 neonates, and we receive roughly 50 outborn/transport admissions each year. Fellows will spend most of their clinical service on the Acute Call Team, which means fellows will be covering approximately 2/3 of the average daily census, including patients in the acute stage of their disease. In other words, our fellows will get high exposure throughout the NICU, a truly case-based learning experience.

Core pediatric specialists

Goryeb Children’s Hospital and its affiliated centers have more than one hundred academic faculty from a broad range of pediatric specialties. We offer electives in the following areas:

  • Pediatric cardiology
  • Maternal-fetal medicine
  • Palliative care
  • Bioethics
  • Pediatric surgery
  • Genetics
  • Infectious disease
  • Neurosurgery
  • NICU pharmacology

Scholarly activity and academic growth are priorities

We are committed to giving our fellows a route to be thought leaders in neonatal-perinatal medicine, in order to prepare them for a career at any academic-based center or within private practice. Therefore, our fellows may choose to participate in clinical research, or take on projects in basic science, translational science, quality improvement, or descriptive studies. Opportunities for scholarly activity within the fellowship are plentiful. This is a unique strength to our program. Our state-of-the-art laboratories are located just minutes from Morristown Medical Center. Fellows can participate in preclinical and translational research alongside PhD researchers, which may allow our fellows to make more significant progress in research during fellowship. Many of our core faculty also hold research faculty positions at academic centers. In addition, world leading guidance on QI research is available within the neonatal group, and we have extensive collegial relationships with fetal cardiology, bioethics, palliative care, and maternal-fetal medicine. On average, neonatology faculty publish 10+ articles/year and regularly attend national meetings. We also have extensive collegial relationships with fetal cardiology, bioethics, palliative care, and maternal-fetal medicine, giving fellows additional opportunities for academic and scholarly growth.

Program offers work/life balance

We are committed to offering our fellows work/life balance. We are supportive of family life and our program has supported many pediatric residents through starting/rearing their families. This philosophy is widely supported in neonatology, within the Department of Pediatrics and throughout the entirety of Atlantic Health. There is a strong push to promote resident and fellow wellness. We are a family, and we support each other.

Affordability

Atlantic Health System offers a competitive salary for the area, and also has subsidized housing adjacent to the hospital for fellows and other trainees. The area has many excellent schools for fellows with children and Atlantic Health System has a day care center available to fellows at an affordable rate.

Meaningful impact

Our neonatal program is well-respected, and our physicians are well-connected. We have many close and collegial relationships with other programs nationally, where fellows may look for jobs. neoFORUM, a nationally-recognized conference sponsored by the neonatology at Atlantic Health, also gives our fellows the opportunity to network with many of the most well-regarded neonatologists in the world.
