Oncology social workers at Atlantic Health System provide support and counseling to help patients cope with the emotional and practical aspects of cancer treatment.
A cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and frightening and can cause practical issues. Meeting with an oncology social worker to address your concerns can ease the distress of treatment and enhance your sense of control and well-being.
An oncology social worker will meet with you at any point along your cancer journey (diagnosis, treatment and survivorship) to:
- Provide supportive counseling to adjust and cope with a cancer diagnosis and its impact on patients, family members and caregivers*
- Teach techniques for stress management and relaxation
- Identify and assist in connecting to community resources and services for:
- financial concerns
- health care resources
- disability resources
- transportation issues
- work-related concerns
- home care needs
- hospice or palliative care concerns
- Discuss advance care planning which includes living wills and advance directives and health care proxy documents
The oncology social workers have specialized training and certification in working with people who have cancer and are available at each of our medical centers. Cancer patients are encouraged to reach out to our oncology social workers for psychosocial support.
