Asthma

Asthma is a chronic condition characterized by the swelling and narrowing of the airways, which leads to wheezing, shortness of breath and cough. These symptoms – also known as an asthma attack – are often triggered by common substances, such as pollen, pet dander, dust mites and mold, among others.

Although asthma cannot be cured, the Respiratory Therapy Department can help patients properly manage it.

Diagnostic Tests for Asthma

Our pulmonary specialists will perform a full physical evaluation, followed by pulmonary function tests, or spirometry, to confirm the diagnosis of asthma and determine its severity. Allergy tests may also be ordered to identify potential asthma triggers.

Asthma Treatment

Treatment for asthma may include medications – the most common of which are inhaled steroids and bronchodilators – as well as strategies to avoid asthma triggers. Any coexisting medical conditions will also need to be assessed and treated, as they may have an impact on asthma symptoms.

We encourage patients to stick to their treatment regime even if symptoms resolve to prevent future asthma attacks. In addition, because asthma control fluctuates over time, regular follow-ups with our specialists are necessary to adjust medications, as needed.
