Pulmonary Research

The Respiratory Therapy Department health care providers have participated in more than 120 major clinical trials for conditions such as COPD, asthma, allergies, pulmonary fibrosis, smoking cessation and lung cancer.

A clinical trial is a research study designed to evaluate a new treatment. While most trials involve medications, others study devices, procedures and even surgery. Clinical trials are closely monitored by the physicians, other researchers and the FDA to ensure patient safety.

Many of today's standard treatments in pulmonary diseases are the direct result of clinical trials that our center and patients participated in. Participation in clinical trials offers patients the option of a new and potentially better treatment that would not be otherwise available. It also contributes to knowledge of the disease and potential FDA approval of the treatment being studied, which will benefit study participants, as well as others with the disease. In addition, in most clinical trials, study medications, as well as study visits, are provided at no charge.
