Pneumonia

Pneumonia occurs when a bacterial or viral infection causes the lung’s air sacs to become inflamed. Symptoms vary depending on age, but may include cough, chest pain, fever, and shortness of breath, among others.

At the Respiratory Therapy Department, we offer services designed to prevent hospitalization, if possible, and treat the underlying source of the infection.

Diagnostic Tests for Pneumonia

  • Chest X-rays
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Bronchoscopy
  • Blood or lab tests

Pneumonia Treatment

Treatment for pneumonia depends on if its bacterial or viral in nature. Our pulmonary specialists typically prescribe oral antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial pneumonia, but in severe cases requiring hospitalization, intravenous antibiotics and oxygen therapy may be necessary. Hospital stays are less frequent with viral pneumonia, which can usually be treated with over the counter pain medications and rest at home. We also provide pneumonia vaccines for older, high-risk patients looking to prevent the disease.
