• One student per service per block; rotation starts on the first Monday of the month

Prerequisites

Successful completion of all 3rd year clerkships; interest in ob-gyn preferred

Description

During the obstetrics & gynecology sub-internship, students will participate in one service specialty (combined office and hospital-based), working with the attending physicians, fellows, and residents and serving in the capacity of an intern.

Learning Experiences

Students will:

• Attend resident didactics and conferences including resident morning report and noon conferences, as well as grand rounds lectures, mortality & morbidity reviews, and journal club
• Have the opportunity to spend several evening or weekend on-call shifts (optional)

Service specifics:

• Gynecologic Oncology – Students will:
  • Assist with surgical cases in the operating room
  • Work in a private office and in the clinic, under the supervision of an attending physician
  • Perform consults and ER assessments
  • Perform morning rounds and post-operative checks on patients
  • Participate in teaching rounds and didactics and prepare one topic for presentation
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a research project (potentially)
    
    
• Maternal-Fetal Medicine – Students will:
  • Participate in morning huddle and patient rounds
  • Participate in teaching rounds
  • Assist with inpatient consultations and with surgical cases in the operating room
  • Observe office procedures and ultrasounds
  • Work in a private office and in the clinic under the supervision of an attending physician
  • Participate in didactics and prepare one topic for presentation
  • Spend one day each week on labor and delivery with the residents
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a research project (potentially)
    
    
• Urogynecology - Students will:
  • Assist with surgical cases in the operating room
  • Work in a private office and in the clinic under the supervision of an attending physician
  • Perform consults, ER assessments, morning rounds, and post-operative checks on patients
  • Participate in teaching rounds and didactics and prepare one topic for presentation
  • Have the opportunity to participate in a research project (potentially)

Goals & Objectives

• To function as an integral member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team
• To assume responsibility for continuity of patient care
• To develop competence in the medical interview and physical examination of women
• To identify and justify a working diagnosis based on the clinical scenario, citing evidence to support the diagnosis
• To develop and implement a comprehensive management plan for each patient
• To learn about the transition from office-based evaluation to inpatient management
• To obtain knowledge in perioperative care and to become familiar with relevant obstetric and/or gynecological procedures
• To apply principles of evidence-based medicine to patient care
• To deliver oral presentations that are comprehensive, organized, and demonstrate sound clinical judgment
• To communicate effectively with teammates, patients, and other healthcare professionals
• To incorporate ethical, social, and diversity perspectives in providing culturally competent healthcare
• To recognize the physician’s role as a leader and as an advocate for women
• To understand medical systems issues that impact patient care
• To incorporate multidimensional feedback into performance
• To explore the advantages of the Atlantic Health System ob-gyn residency program for potential residency candidates

Feedback & Evaluation

The attending preceptor, with input from the team, will provide consistent written evaluations and will offer feedback throughout the rotation. A final, written evaluation will be completed at the end of the rotation.
