Global Child Health
Faculty Supervisors: Adam Handler, MD and Yewade Ng, DO
Experiences in global health are available as call-free blocks of one to four weeks. Atlantic Health System offers resident programs for travel to Honduras (Shoulder to Shoulder) with Dr. Susan Kaye, medical director of graduate medical education and chair of family practice, and Haiti (Hands Up for Haiti) with Drs. Handler and Ng, to work in well-established clinics. Pediatric residents in their second and third years may make arrangements to work in other resource-poor countries. In recent years we have had residents work in a hospital in Nigeria, an HIV program in Ghana, a medical mission in Vietnam, a vaccination program in Haiti, a pediatric hospital in India, and a rural area of Venezuela. Funding for international travel for medical missions is available to our residents from the Benjamin H. Josephson, MD Fund.
Global Health Certificate Program
For those residents with a special interest in international health, a global health curriculum has been created and is available as a self-directed preparatory program. The program focuses on the general principles relating to the health of children in developing countries, as well as how these principles apply to underserved populations in the United States. The curriculum was created using competency-based goals and objectives developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section on International Health. For interested and motivated residents, the certificate program was developed to enhance the knowledge of pediatric residents in the general principles of child health in developing countries and to prepare them for international travel for medical missions.
The program consists of a series of didactic lectures presented to all of the residents, carefully selected reading materials, and the completion of a faculty-supervised clinical, educational or research project. Residents must participate in at least one global health experience during their residency to be eligible for this certificate.
Medical Education Track
Faculty Supervisor: Tyree Winters, DO and Jami Zaretsky, MD
This longitudinal comprehensive experience will provide GCH pediatric residents the skills to explore the role of pediatricians as medical educators through mentorship, focused educational experiences, formal didactics, and a medical education scholarly project. After completion of the track, residents will be able to offer constructive feedback, develop clinical performance evaluations, create high quality educational objectives and curricular plans, and provide effective clinical didactics with small and large group teaching. The residents will be encouraged to present their medical education scholarly project at a national educational conference and/or attend an Association of Pediatric Program Directors conference. At graduation, a certificate of completion will be presented to residents who successfully accomplish the required elements of the track.
Medical Education Certificate Program
Residents may begin the track starting in January of their PGY-2 year but must complete at least one academic year of the program to qualify for the certificate of completion. Residents must also maintain good academic standing throughout their track participation.
Interested residents must apply by September 30th of their PGY-2 year. Approval for participation must be granted by the Residency Program Director. Residents participating in the track will be paired with a faculty member who will serve as their mentor throughout the experience. These mentors will help ensure residents are meeting the requirements of the track, as well as receiving career guidance and resources to help complete their scholarly project.
Residents will receive formal didactic lectures on medical education that will include but not limited to AHS Department of Pediatrics Faculty Development lecture series, AHS Undergraduate Medical Education Committee Faculty Development conference and Association of Pediatric Program Directors virtual faculty development cafes.
