During the internship year, Overlook Family Medicine residents spend two months in intensive care, directly supervising the care of severely ill patients with a wide range of medical problems under the supervision of attending physicians in cardiology, pulmonology, infectious disease and other intensivists.
Residents learn to manage patients on ventilators; perform procedures such as placing central and arterial lines; attend lectures and daily radiology rounds; perform paracentesis and thoracentesis; participate on the code team; and communicate with families regarding patients' care preferences and bioethics issues. Residents help to integrate specialist input into a comprehensive care plan for each patient, while functioning as part of a team with other residents, medical students, intensive care nurses and a teaching attending.
