Behavioral Science

All Overlook Family Medicine practitioners need to know how to manage their patients' behavioral health needs as well as understand their own feelings and thoughts about the doctor-patient relationship. Our residents work with our behavioral science director to provide appropriate treatment and improve their skills. This training involves:

  • Precepting cases
  • Small group (Balint) discussions of physician-patient relationships and challenging cases
  • Monthly observation of a psychiatrist's consultation interview with one of our patients
  • Conferences covering a wide range of behavioral science topics
  • Collaborative care of family medicine patients with the behavioral scientist and family medicine social workers
  • Teaching programs in medical humanities
  • Educational programs in ethics and palliative care
  • Youth mental health screenings and related precepting
  • Cognitive behavioral counseling sessions
