The Medical Humanities are integrated across the three years of residency training. Residents attend Balint Groups and other sessions in behavioral science, medical ethics, palliative care, medical narrative and other medical humanities programs. Notably, the program arranges for every resident three visits in each year of residency to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a session coordinated by an arts educator, accompanied by family medicine faculty. The goal of the sessions and related exercises and discussions is to broaden and enhance physicians' observational skills. The humanities programs are coordinated by the program's behavioral scientist. Ethics education also includes attending selected meetings of the Overlook Bioethics Committee.
In addition, the program's behavioral scientist co-coordinates an annual humanistic medicine conference for all Atlantic Health System residents and staff.
